Augusta County was formed from Orange County in 1738 and originally encompassed all western lands of Virginia beyond the Blue Ridge Mountains and south of Frederick County. An accurate transcription of the marriage records currently held at the Bland County Courthouse, this book presents these data in a form that is easy to use: 8" x 11", landscape-orientation format. An alphabetized index is included at the end of this book to assist the reader in locating marriage records. It contains 249 SURNAMES and over 8,000 names in all. When possible census data was utilized to verify and/or identify names which were nearly illegible. It should be noted that oftentimes a clerk recorded only initials and sometimes variations in the spelling of names occurred. The names of parents and occupation of the groom are included as is the name of the minister who performed the marriage. BOTETOURT COUNTY, VIRGINIA MARRIAGES 1770 - 1853 - by John Vogt & T. William Kethley, Jr. Two volumes, 1987, xi, 600 pages, figures, appendices, map. Originally composed of the southern portion of Augusta County, Botetourt became the parent county for a total of forty-four counties, including much of the West Virginia area. CAROLINE COUNTY, VIRGINIA COURT RECORDS 1742 - 1833 & MARRIAGES 1782 - 1810 - by William Lindsay Hopkins. 197 pages, index. A valuable collection considering the great loss of documentation suffered by this county. Caroline County was established in 1728 from the upper portions of Essex, King and Queen, and King William counties. Some further territory from King and Queen County was added in 1742 and 1762. FREDERICK COUNTY, VIRGINIA MARRIAGES 1738 - 1850 - by John Vogt & T. William Kethley, Jr. 1984, ix, 461 pages, indices, appendices, figure, map. Although Frederick County was created in 1738, it did not begin to function as a political entity until about 1745. Frederick County and its seat at Winchester lay on a vital crossroads of colonial migration routes into the Ohio Valley and down the Shenandoah Valley into Kentucky and Tennessee. The current volume contains 8,093 marriages, consisting primarily of ministers' returns (with an occasional bond), compiled from a county register in the Virginia State Library, Archives Division. GILES COUNTY, VIRGINIA MARRIAGES 1806 - 1850 - by John Vogt & T. William Kethley, Jr. 1985, vii, 147 pages, indices, figure, map. Giles County was established in 1806 from Montgomery County and portions of Monroe and Tazewell counties. Parts of Wythe, Monroe, Mercer, Craig and Tazewell were added later. The 1,498 marriage records in this volume are particularly complete and contain both ministers' returns and surety bonds. GREENBRIER COUNTY, VIRGINIA RECORDS, Volume 4: Marriages of Greenbrier County (W.) Virginia 1782 - 1900 - transcribed by Larry Shuck. 3 volumes, 1991, xii, 997 pages. This volume is a thorough and comprehensive listing and abstracting of data from the marriage records of this most important early West Virginia county. Up to 1863, the marriages are part of Virginia's records, and after that date they fall within the purview of West Virginia public record. A full and complete index of all names is provided in volume 3 of the set; volume one includes a surname frequency and the complete abstracts sorted alphabetical by husband's name; volume 2 uses the bride's maiden name as the sort key. In this way, many family relationships can easily be seen which would not be visible while scattered throughout the data. The area in the extreme southwestern portion of Virginia served as an important staging reguion for settlers moving through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky and Tennessee. new.gif (319 bytes) MASON COUNTY, VIRGINIA MARRIAGES, 1806 - 1850 - By Carrie Eldridge. 49 pages, map. 8½x11. Mason County was formed in 1804 from the northwestern corner of Kanawha County. Between 1817 and 1824 the boundary demarcation between Mason and Kanawha counties was settled. Jackson took a part of Mason's lands in 1831 and another parcel was taken with the creation of Putnam County in 1848. To this new revised edition is added a complete index of names in the volume, including bride, groom, bondsmen, parents, witnesses, guardians, ministers and any other person mentioned in the original document. Also an appendix of ministers is added along with the number of marriages conducted by each and an outer date range for the marriages of each minister. Most records are quite complete and contain a wealth of genealogical information. The index contains references to the following: 2,984 marriages; 996 minister's returns; 3,379 witnesses; 99 guardians; 2,614 bondsmen; 122 signed permissions; and 1,396 parents. Rappahannock County's creation in 1833 represented the final separation of territory from the parent county, Culpeper. Roanoke County was the last (1838) subdivision of Botetourt County (formed 1770). The 350 marriage records were compiled from a copy of the county register in the Virginia State Library, Archives Division. Rockbridge County's creation in 1778 from portions of Augusta and Botetourt counties was part of a flurry of new county organizations and older county subdivisions during the Revolutionary period. SCOTT COUNTY, VIRGINIA MARRIAGES, 1815-1853 - by Mary D. Fugate. 1989, x, 109 pages, indices, figure, map. Scott County was formed in 1814 from portions of Lee, Washington, and Russell counties. In March, 1775, Daniel Boone made a road through Big Moccasin Gap in this county, following an older Indian Path. The trail became known as the Wilderness Road, and for many years it was a main route to Kentucky from the East.
