1790 U.S. Federal Census

HEADS OF FAMILIES AT THE FIRST CENSUS OF THE UNITED STATES TAKEN IN THE YEAR 1790 - (bicentennial edition) A bicentennial edition of the United States Federal Census for 1790. Between 1906 and 1908 the Government printing office published the surviving records of the first federal census of 1790 in volumes for each state. Today, most of these records and even their reprints are out of print and inaccessible except through use in research libraries and archives. Iberian Publishing has arranged to utilize Bureau of the Census logos for the bicentennial of the census and produce a new edition of this most important work. To date, four states are available. These volumes are printed using the original G.P.O. texts with soft leatherette covers, on 8x11 inch acid-free vellum stock with a permanency of two centuries under normal usage.

THE 1860 FEDERAL CENSUS FOR BUCHANAN COUNTY, VIRGINIA - Debbie S. Dehart, 1999. 8 1/2" x 11" format, 175 pages plus every-name index. Buchanan County was formed in 1858, named for the current United States president, and taken from portions of Russell and Tazewell counties. In 1880 a parcel was taken from Buchanan to form part of newly-created Dickenson County. Buchanan County records have suffered from a series of disasters; first, a fire in 1862 destroyed the courthouse; then, in April, 1885, a second fire destroyed the courthouse again, together with all the records to that time. Finally, many records were damaged or destroyed by the flood which rampaged through the county in 1977. Thus, the Federal Census presents a very complete picture of this late-formed county on the eve of the War Between the States. The records are clear, although the No. 2 pencil with which the census-takers recorded their data on the sheets require careful reading in faint areas. The author has also incorporated valuable non-census information in this work, including data on births, deaths, marriages, and parents of many of the families enumerated. This helps to present a more complete picture of the persons in the list rather than the bare bones presented in the census. It also points up important inter-family relationships which existed throughout the county and area. The order of the data is: Identification Number/Family Number; Name (Last, First, Middle)(Maiden Name); Age; Sex; Husband, Wife, Daughter, Son; Occupation; Value of Real Estate owned; Value of Personal Property owned; State of Birth; County of Birth; Marriage Date; Marriage Place; Parents of the couple being enumerated; Widow/widower, if applicable; Date of birth; Date of death; Notes.-----Item # BUCHVACEN60    Price: $30.00

CAROLINE COUNTY, VIRGINIA 1850 CENSUS - transcribed by Mark Anderson Sprouse. 1997, iv, 182 pages, index. Caroline County Virginia was formed in 1727 from parts of Essex, King and Queen and King William Counties. It is a strategic county for geneologists because of its location. Many colonial Virginia ancestors settled or "passed through" Caroline. The 1850 Caroline County Census was enumerated by Thomas T. Chandler. Mr. Chandler's work has numerous legibility and spelling "problems," as well as what appears to be a few bonifide errors. Mr. Chandler must be forgiven. How was he to know that as he traveled the roads of 1850 Caroline, that every letter he put down would be under extreme scrutiny by future researchers. Chandler's writing is often difficult to discern as t's are uncrossed confusing them with unlooped l's, a's are not closed and might be u's, i's are often not dotted and can't be distinguished from unlooped e's and similar problems. Even more frustrating for me were the names that were clear but didn't really make sense; as letters seem to be excluded or extra ones added. An example of this would be the several families that have different spelling within the household such as # 897 with "Bird" and "Byrd" or # 1014 with "Garnet" and "Garnett". In the case of the few names that really didn't fit, the transcriber entered it as it appears in the census unless he could find the spelling for that specific name in at least two other sources. Readers are reminded that the burden of proof remains on the researcher and therefore consult the original record when in doubt.
